Nicaragua Report Back
From El Bronx hasta Nicaragua!
This presentation recounts our journey from the South Bronx to Nicaragua, undertaken to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Sandinista Popular Revolution.
Nicaragua, a Central American country, fought for and won a popular socialist revolution on July 19th, 1979. This revolution overthrew Anastasio Somoza, a U.S.-backed dictator. When the Ronald Reagan administration countered this revolution by funding the contras, Nicaragua emerged victorious under the FSLN leadership. With a rich history of resisting the U.S. empire for over a century, Nicaragua's resistance spans from the occupation by the Confederate mercenary William Walker to the marine occupation, to the popular peasant rebellions led by Cesar Augusto Sandino, to the 1979 revolutionary triumph, and continues until today. Nicaragua is an essential part of the troika of resistance in our Americas.
We felt it was important to share our experience in Nicaragua during this historic event on July 19th with our people from the Bronx.
